Creativity Research: Bibliography for Instrument Design

Purpose: Ground the creativity instruments (AUT divergent thinking, CPSS problem-solving style, ECI everyday creativity, CAI creative achievement) in the canonical creativity-research literature, and document which claims the battery can and cannot support.

0. How to read this bibliography

Entries link to the publisher's record via DOI or ISBN wherever one exists, so every bibliographic detail can be checked directly. Where an annotation draws on secondary sources rather than the full text, the entry or section says so; the one standing case is the Kirton tradition (§3.3). No citations have been fabricated.


1. Tier 1: Read first (most directly applicable to our battery design)

These eight references are the highest-priority reading for whoever authors the AUT, Problem-Solving Style, Everyday Creativity, and CAI instruments.

1.1 Kaufman, Plucker & Baer (2008): Essentials of Creativity Assessment

  • Why it matters: Practical comparative guide to every major creativity instrument (TTCT, AUT, CAQ, Gough CPS, CAT, self-report questionnaires). The single most directly applicable book for our build-vs-replica decisions per dimension.
  • Single biggest contribution to our design: Lets us make explicit build-vs-buy decisions per instrument, with attention to administration procedure, scoring rules, and known psychometric limits.

  • Why it matters: 232 chapters across 2 volumes; the definitive encyclopedic reference.   • Single biggest contribution: A single source covering every construct in our battery. The table of contents literally maps onto our dimensions. This is the all-source map for the design phase.

1.3 Carson, Peterson & Higgins (2005): CAQ foundational paper

  • Why it matters: Foundational paper for the CAQ: 96 items, 10 domains, 0–7 scale. Our CAI is a 13-domain × 10-level structural divergence from this.
  • Single biggest contribution: The validated item structure our CAI is designed to diverge from.

1.4 Kaufman & Beghetto (2009): Four C Model

  • Why it matters: Originating paper for the 4C model: expands the traditional Big-C / little-c dichotomy by adding mini-c (personally transformative learning) and Pro-c (professional-level creative achievement that has not yet had historical impact).
  • Single biggest contribution: Defensible four-level taxonomy that lets us write items differentiated by level of creative impact. Directly grounds our everyday-creativity (little-c) dimension and clarifies that our CAI L8–L9 (formal recognition, canonical) sits at the Pro-c / Big-C boundary.

1.5 Beketayev & Runco (2016): Automated AUT scoring

  • Open-access status: Yes: open-access via PMC.
  • Why it matters: Validated semantic-distance algorithm for automated AUT scoring achieving r ≈ 0.74 with human raters. The single most implementable engineering reference for our AUT scoring engine.
  • Single biggest contribution: Reusable algorithm for scoring the fluency / flexibility / originality dimensions of AUT responses without requiring human raters. Should be cited in the AUT scoring engine implementation.

1.6 Kim (2006): TTCT psychometric critique

  • Why it matters: Canonical psychometric evaluation of the TTCT (reliability, predictive validity for adult creative achievement, normative drift). The benchmark against which our AUT-derived scores must be validated before we ship.
  • Single biggest contribution: Defines what validity claims we can and cannot make about AUT scores. Forces honest framing: AUT measures divergent-thinking capacity, not creative achievement (a distinct construct).

1.7 Runco (1991): Divergent Thinking

  • Full citation: Runco, M. A. (1991). Divergent Thinking. Ablex Publishing.
  • Why it matters: Only book-length treatment of divergent thinking as a construct. Runco's central argument: divergent thinking is necessary but not sufficient for creativity, and the two are often wrongly conflated.
  • Single biggest contribution: Determines how we must frame AUT scores in our reports. We cannot call AUT scores "creativity scores" without overclaiming. Our candidate report must say "divergent-thinking capacity (a construct related to but distinct from creative achievement)."

1.8 Amabile (1996): Creativity in Context

  • Full citation: Amabile, T. M. (1996). Creativity in Context: Update to The Social Psychology of Creativity. Westview Press / Routledge. ISBN 978-0-8133-4549-9.
  • Why it matters: Full book-length statement of the componential theory of creativity (domain-relevant skills + creativity-relevant processes + intrinsic task motivation + social environment). The four-axes framework that most strongly differentiates creative performance from ability alone.
  • Single biggest contribution: Provides the theoretical grounding for why our battery must measure motivation/identity (Problem-Solving Style, Everyday Creativity) in addition to capacity (AUT) and achievement (CAI). Without the motivation axis, scores over-credit ability and under-credit actual creative output.

  • Instrument: KAI is a 32-item inventory placing respondents on a continuum from "adaptor" (efficient, careful, conforming) to "innovator" (radical, paradigm-breaking). It is the principal "problem-solving style" measure in the creativity literature.

  • Licensing flag: KAI is a commercial proprietary instrument administered by KAI practitioners and the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory organization. Like CAQ/MFQ-2/CNI, the platform's CPSS must be an original structural replica, not adapted KAI items. Current licensing terms should be confirmed directly with the KAI organization.

7. Design decisions this bibliography informs

This bibliography grounds the following design decisions:

  1. AUT scoring engine should cite Beketayev & Runco (2016) as the engineering reference. Their semantic-distance algorithm achieves r ≈ 0.74 with human raters; we should either adopt their published algorithm or document our variant against their benchmark.

  2. AUT validity framing must follow Runco (1991), Kim (2006), and Zeng et al. (2011): AUT scores measure divergent-thinking capacity, not creative achievement. Candidate reports and REVIEWER documentation must reflect this: language like "divergent-thinking capacity (a construct related to but distinct from creative achievement)."

  3. Everyday creativity items should explicitly aim at the Kaufman & Beghetto (2009) little-c level (not mini-c, not Pro-c). Our CAI L8–L9 (formal recognition, canonical) sits at the Pro-c / Big-C boundary per the same taxonomy.

  4. Problem-solving style replica: the Kirton entries carry publisher links (§3.3), so the construct is grounded directly in the adaption-innovation literature. The replica itself must not reproduce KAI items, which remain proprietary.

  5. Kaufman, Plucker & Baer (2008) is the onboarding text for whoever authors the items: required reading before item authoring begins.

  6. Runco & Pritzker (2020) Encyclopedia is the all-source map for the design phase. Where the plan touches a construct (everyday creativity, divergent thinking, self-efficacy, etc.), the corresponding Encyclopedia chapter should be the canonical reference.


8. Open follow-ups

  • Confirm current KAI licensing terms directly with the KAI organization before finalizing the CPSS structural replica
  • Confirm Carson et al. (2005) / CAQ commercial licensing terms with Shelley Carson before publishing the CAI as a structural replica
  • Decide whether to cite Sternberg (1999) or Kaufman & Sternberg (2010) as the primary handbook reference; the 2019 second edition of the Cambridge Handbook may supersede both: verify current edition before citing
